It is now five weeks since the start of the 2007 school year. Students are well into their studies and at the senior level they will be moving towards their internal NCEA assessments. Parents should expect their senior students will have many ‘assignments’ on the go.
It is important students continue to work steadily to ensure they do not get behind. Success for our NCEA students depends on maintaining good work habits. This includes using their diary to highlight things such as due dates, homework and important events. If the students feel they have no homework they can always be reading or reviewing their work to assist in clarifying their understanding.
In the junior school students also need to develop good routines. They should be using their diaries, recording homework, important information and events that concern them. Although they may not have the pressure of assessments for NCEA, they
will still be required to do regular homework by their teachers.
It is also pleasing to see the large number of students who are signing up for this year’s sports teams. By joining a team they will not only enjoy the companionship of their peers but also the pride of representing Rangitikei College.
Dave Karena
It is with great sadness that we note the recent passing of Dave Karena our College Kaumatua. Uncle Dave was a great source of support and strength to the College and his passing leaves a large void to fill.
Uncle Dave’s funeral was attended by a great number of staff and students as a sign of our respect for all he did for the College.

College Swimming and Athletics Championships
Over the last two weeks the College has successfully held both swimming and athletics championships at the College. Both events saw increasing numbers of competitors and some outstanding results from the students. In the overall house competition Tararua won the swimming with Kaimanawa winning the athletics.
The swimming sports were held in warm weather and good performances have seen a strong team selected for the Wanganui Secondary Schools Intercollegiate Swimming on 21 March.
Last Thursday the annual athletics sports took place in fine weather and the all events were very competitive. The highlights of the day were the efforts of sprinters Harris Talaumi and Joshua Keyes-Kumaroa, both boys were very close to breaking College records in their events. Once again the College will have a strong team in the Wanganui and Manawatu Intercollegiate events next week.

Rangitikei College LifE “ “Challenging and motivating students for the future”
What a fabulous bunch of young men and women! I am referring to our Year 13 students who have just spent four days on their leadership camp at Kawhatau.
The camp is designed to challenge and motivate our senior students and set them up for the year ahead. This year they had the additional responsibility of running an activities day for our new Year 9 students. I had the pleasure of joining the camp on the Year 9 day and was delighted to see how our seniors met and thrived on their challenges. It was a very successful day and both year levels got a lot out of it. (See comments).
It is clear from the responses of both groups that we have established a very supportive Year 13 group who now have a special bond with the Year 9 students. Also the Year 9’s know more about our seniors, their new school, their teachers and each other.
I was also delighted to have the support of parents for this day. Talking to them it seems the Year 9’s are enjoying their new school and they were also impressed by how well our Year 13’s ran the day.
Thank you to all the camp staff and the Year 13’s for making this event so successful.

– English
I have just completed my teaching degree at Massey University in Palmerston North. My home is in Feilding and my interests include art, photograph and playing the piano. My favourite sports include indoor hockey, netball and swimming.
Mr Eric Ramsteijn
– Physical Education
I arrived from Taihape Area School at the start of Term 4 2006 as a long term reliever for English. This year I was appointed full-time as a PE and Outdoor Ed teacher.
My interests are reading non-fiction; I love finding out about how things were discovered and then developed over time as well as the lives people have led. Travel is another interest, especially all over NZ - I reckon it is an amazing country. I loved playing sport but a few injuries have stopped most of that so now I try to get out along the rivers and up in the hills as much as possible instead!
One thing I am looking forward to is finding a house to slowly do up and to create a garden full of NZ native shrubs.
Miss Sarah Luoni
– History, English
After leaving Rangitikei College in 2002 I transferred myself to Palmerston North and spent three years studying at Massey to gain my Bachelor of Education. I spent last year relieving at different schools around Marton which was a lot of fun and a great break after studying for so long! I am now teaching History and English here at Rangitikei College and am looking forward to a great year.
In my spare time I like to escape to the beach with my friends and enjoy the sunshine! I also enjoy painting and playing rugby, touch, volleyball and have some major travel aspirations to fulfill over the next few years.

Rangitikei College Life - Feb 2007 No. 1
Rangitikei College Life “Challenging and motivating students for the future”
Welcome back to College year 2007. I hope all students enjoyed a good break and returned to school determined to do all they can to reach their potential this year. I am sure all the parents enjoyed having their children at home; no doubt you will enjoy them starting school again as well.
I would particularly like to welcome all those students who are new to the College. We have new students at all levels of the school and I had the pleasure of meeting many new parents as well. The message I have given to students is that they will get more out of their time at the College with the more effort they put in. The same applies to all those students who are returning this year.
At this time of the year many Year 12 and 13 students are reflecting on their NCEA results. I have no doubt that some will be wishing they had worked harder last year, or taken advantage of the revision/study classes run by the staff. It is time for them to set some goals for the year and to focus on reaching their potential. The best advice for all senior students doing NCEA is to work consistently all year and listen to the advice of your teachers.
This year I hope all students will get involved in what we are doing at the College. We have a wide range of cultural and sporting activities to complement the work we do in the classroom. I am looking forward to observing their talents as the year progresses.
If parents/caregivers have any concerns in relation to activities at school please contact the people concerned to discuss the issue. If you are still not satisfied after this please do not hesitate to contact senior management.
I am also very keen to hear about any good news relating to any of our students achieving outside the school in their fields of interest.
It has been great to meet so many parents through the enrolment process. Any of those parents I have not yet met are very welcome to contact me to arrange a suitable meeting time. I do this because I know how important it is for us to work together for your children’s education.
Mr Peddie
It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Murray Peddie, in December last year. Murray was a much-respected teacher who gave over 30 years service to Rangitikei College. His sense of humour is legendary amongst staff. He will be missed.
