Rangitikei College Life - Feb 2007 No. 1

Rangitikei College Life “Challenging and motivating students for the future”

Welcome back to College year 2007. I hope all students enjoyed a good break and returned to school determined to do all they can to reach their potential this year. I am sure all the parents enjoyed having their children at home; no doubt you will enjoy them starting school again as well.

I would particularly like to welcome all those students who are new to the College. We have new students at all levels of the school and I had the pleasure of meeting many new parents as well. The message I have given to students is that they will get more out of their time at the College with the more effort they put in. The same applies to all those students who are returning this year.

At this time of the year many Year 12 and 13 students are reflecting on their NCEA results. I have no doubt that some will be wishing they had worked harder last year, or taken advantage of the revision/study classes run by the staff. It is time for them to set some goals for the year and to focus on reaching their potential. The best advice for all senior students doing NCEA is to work consistently all year and listen to the advice of your teachers.

This year I hope all students will get involved in what we are doing at the College. We have a wide range of cultural and sporting activities to complement the work we do in the classroom. I am looking forward to observing their talents as the year progresses.

If parents/caregivers have any concerns in relation to activities at school please contact the people concerned to discuss the issue. If you are still not satisfied after this please do not hesitate to contact senior management.

I am also very keen to hear about any good news relating to any of our students achieving outside the school in their fields of interest.

It has been great to meet so many parents through the enrolment process. Any of those parents I have not yet met are very welcome to contact me to arrange a suitable meeting time. I do this because I know how important it is for us to work together for your children’s education.

Mr Peddie
It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Murray Peddie, in December last year. Murray was a much-respected teacher who gave over 30 years service to Rangitikei College. His sense of humour is legendary amongst staff. He will be missed.

New Staff
Welcome to our new staff this year. Eric Ramsteijn teaching PE, Alisha Maas teaching English and Sarah Luoni teaching History. Profiles of these staff will follow in future newsletters.

Rangitikei College Trust
I would like to thank the College Trust for their support in providing Year 9 stationery packs and paying subject fees for each new Year 9 enrolment. Once again the support of the Trust is much appreciated by the school and those parents of our Year 9 students.

This support has enabled all Year 9’s to start school with their complete stationery requirements from the first day of classes.

The Year 9’s, under the support and guidance of our Year 13 students, enjoyed their first day of college life – in very warm conditions.

Working for Families info
The school has been asked to distribute Working for Families information via our newsletter. Working for Families is a package designed to make it easier to work and raise a family. It pays extra income to many thousands of NZ families. Please refer to the separate sheet for further information.

Learning Support Dept
If any parents have cushions, bean bags, kettle, sofa, bench fridge, board games
that they would like to donate, please contact Miss Smith at the College.

Canteen Info
This year the school Canteen is being run by the Palm Dairy. As a result of this we are hoping to offer a greater variety of food for our students.

The Canteen hours will be the same as last year, however students will be able to order their lunch in the following ways:-

1. Marton students may order and pay for their food at the Palm Dairy on their way to
school.
2. Students who are unable to order directly from the Dairy may fill in the order form at
the main office before 8.35am each day, and pay for their food when it arrives at
the school.
3. Lunch orders will also be taken at the canteen at interval.

Many students will be familiar with this ordering system and food that the Palm Dairy has also supplies through their primary schools.
